Designing Your Ideal Survival Garden
When your survival depends on what you grow, your garden is suddenly very important. Before it gets to that stage, you should carefully consider what should go into the garden and how you will preserve it.
Choosing Your Crops
The plants you select for planting need to fit a few criteria.
Nutrition: Low calorie food may taste nice, but in the end it will not help you survive for long. While you can certainly plant things like lettuce and radishes, donât neglect the higher calorie, nutrient dense plants like potatoes, sweet potatoes and corn.
Yield: Wheat might be nice to have for bread, but if you are growing it, youâll waste a lot of land for just a little flour. Instead, youâll want to plant high yield vegetables and grains that can provide you with enough food to sustain your family.
Duration: How long will your food last? Lettuce is wilted within a few days, while cabbage and squash can keep for months in a cool space. How long the food can be stored will also have an impact on your decision. While some vegetables can be preserved, others will need to be used up quickly.
Sustainable: If you are in a SHTF situation, youâll need to make sure you have plants in your garden that you can collect seeds from. Youâll want good quality plants, preferably heirloom, that produce seeds you can collect and store. If they donât produce proper seeds, as some hybrids and highly modified seeds may do, then the plant is all but useless.
So, what should be in your garden? Here are a few vegetables that should be in every survival garden, regardless of taste or preference.
Beans: Pole beans are very high yield, but any bean is a good choice for the garden. These are high in fibre, vitamins and calcium.
Carrots: This root vegetable is nutritious, easy to grow and fairly easy to store, as well. Plus, itâs a very kid-friendly food.
Corn: If you have livestock, corn can be very useful in providing feed. It is also good for human consumption, particularly if you choose a variety that hardens on the stalk.
Cucumbers: The more you pick, the more the cucumber vines will produce. Not only are cucumbers nutritious and healthy, they are also very easy to grow.
Potatoes: Each potato plan produces around half a dozen potatoes that are packed with vitamins, minerals and fibre. They keep very well in cool storage, as well.
Spinach: While spinach does best in cooler weather, it is worth planting for the large amounts of vitamins and minerals it contains, including iron, Vitamin C, folic acid and thiamine. It doesnât last long when fresh, but can be frozen or dried.
Squash: There are so many varieties of squash that you should be able to find several that your family enjoys. These are easy plants to grow and they can produce multiple vegetables per plant. Pick frequently to encourage more growth. Squash are full of vitamins and fibre.
Tomatoes: You can never have too many tomatoes. These are very simple plants to grow, but they pack a nutritional punch.
